1.0 Teams
1.0.1 Each team will consist of no fewer than two players. Teams may opt to have more than two players on the roster to serve as alternates, but only two players will be guaranteed officially ranked playing time. Teams must have at least two players present on the night of play to compete.
1.0.2 If teams arrive with less than four players the opposing team will choose if they would like to compete as normal, require the opposing team to forfeit and play out a regular set of matches, or require the other team to forfeit and not compete.
1.1 Captains
1.1.1 Each team will have one captain. The captain will be responsible for communicating with the league and ensuring that their reffing duties are preformed.
1.2 Players
1.2.1 Up to four players can compete in one match. If less than or more than 4 players arrive the captain will appoint who plays more or less than once.
1.2.2 To play in an officially ranked game or match a player must be in good standing with the league and a registered and paid member of the team he/she is playing for and the season he/she is attempting to play within.
2.0 Games, Sets, Matches & Scoring (See Fig 1)
2.0.1 A Game will consist of a series of alternating serves and volleys until one team reaches 11 points. (teams must win by two)
2.0.2 A Set will be the best of 5 Games
2.0.3 A Match will consist of 1 doubles Set and 2 singles Sets.
2.0.4 The team to win the majority of the Sets takes the overall win for that Match
2.0.5 Games will follow standard table tennis rules EXCEPT for on the serve. See game rules below.
3.0 Referees & MC
3.0.1 All games will be considered to be self refereed, however there will be one player from a team that is not competing in that round present to handle any disagreements over calls. This player will not make calls, but must be attentive to the play in order to settle disputes when they arise.
3.0.2 Teams who fail to provide a referee for their designated referring duties will automatically be docked one lost Set.
3.0.3 Occasionally the house MC may act as a stand in referee
4.0 League
4.0.1 Players should schedule approximately 1 hour for Match play. Using the game and match layout from above results in a total of 12 games being played per Match. (3 Sets = 15 games total = Approximately 60 minutes per round)
5.0 Game Play Rules
5.0.1 At the beginning of each round, teams volley for serve. The ball must be in play for five strokes before the volley begins. Once it has begun the first player(s) to win a point take the serve. Serve then alternates between teams for the rest of the round.
5.0.2 The serve must bounce once on the server’s side of the net and land past the midway point of the opponents’ half. If it does not land past the midway point the server receives a fault. He or she can then serve again. If he or she receives another fault a point is awarded to the opposing team.
5.0.3 If the serve hits the net the server receives a fault. Two faults result in a point awarded to the opposite team.
5.0.4 Once the ball is served it remains in play so long as it lands on the opposite side of the table.
6.0 Points & Scoring
- Team A returns the ball and it does not bounce on Team B’s side of the table. (Team B earns 1 pt)
- Team A returns the ball and it bounces twice on Team B’s side of the table. (Team A earns 1 pt)
- Team A returns the ball, it hits the net, and lands back on Team A’s side. (Team B earns 1 pt)
- Team A returns the ball, it bounces once on Team B’s side and Team B is unable to return the ball to Team A’s side. (Team A earns 1 pt)
- Team A receives two faults. (Team B earns 1 pt)
7.0 Illegal Actions:
- Players may not lean on, sit on, or put their hand(s) on the table during play. (Play stopped and one point awarded to opposing team.)
- Players may not cross to the opponents half of the table. (Play stopped and one point awarded to opposing team.)
- Players may not taunt or purposely distract other players. (Play stopped and one point awarded to opposing team.)
- Players must confirm the opponent(s) is ready before service. (If opponent was not ready the ball is re-served.)
- Once the match has begun players may not leave the table until the match is complete. (If player(s) leave the match is forfeited.)
A Gentle(wo)mens Game:
Rock & Roll Ping Pong should be considered a sport for the civilized. While competitive banter and enthusiasm is welcome, abusive behavior will not be tolerated. The MC of the evening has final and complete discretion with correcting abusive behavior. As a general rule players deemed to be acting in an unsportsmanlike manner will be 1) warned 2) removed from that nights play and 3) removed from the league. Refunds are NOT available for those ejected from the league.
